After an intense and tight qualifying session, Leclerc started ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and teammate Sainz. All three maintained their positions through the opening laps, Leclerc holding off Verstappen’s repeated advances. The first round of pit stops triggered a three-lap battle, in which Verstappen took the lead three separate times. In the end, the resilient Leclerc held on to his lead after Verstappen locked up into Turn 1. A late safety car bunched the pack back together, but any concerns were soon pushed aside as the Ferrari tore off into the distance at a pace which Verstappen, now nursing a steering issue, just could not challenge. Sainz capitalised on the Dutchman's woes, claiming second position.

Ferrari's victory in Bahrain was their first win, and 1-2 finish, since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix where Sebastian Vettel lead home Leclerc, and marked the perfect start to the 2022 Formula 1 season. It was Leclerc’s first win since Monza in 2019, and Sainz’s seventh career visit to the podium, his fifth as a Ferrari driver.
